Nearly nine years ago, owner and head cook, Darwin Copeland, opened Z-Best Barbeque Chicken and Ribs, featuring “low and slow” smoked and grilled chicken and ribs complemented by homemade, crowd-pleasing, and comforting classic southern sides. Think mac and cheese, candied sweet potatoes, and collard greens all prepared with authentic recipes that will keep you coming back for more. The popular restaurant moved in 2014 to its current Uptown location on Fifth Avenue and achieved designation as a Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant in March of 2017.
As a Bronze designated restaurant, Z-Best Barbeque adheres to many sustainable practices in energy efficiency, water conservation, and recycling waste. One of its biggest accomplishments is the restaurant’s commitment to employee welfare and the people in its surrounding community. According to their sustainability profile, Z-Best’s owners and staff all live near the restaurant. Employees are provided a free shift meal, emergency transportation when necessary, cross-training and advancement opportunities, guaranteed hours, and performance-based raises. Owner, Darwin, regularly provides access to healthy, nutritious food to community members in need. Z-Best Barbeque also helps to provide an avenue for former felons to rebuild their lives with meaningful training and employment opportunities to assist their re-entry into the workforce and society.
