Located in the heart of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium, Jambo Grill offers healthy and delicious meals and snacks for visitors in an inclusive family-friendly environment. In 2016, Jambo Grill earned a Gold designation with the Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant program due to its high level of commitment to improving the environment, economy, and communities of the Pittsburgh region.
“Conservation is the core of what we do here so we try to do everything we can to operate in a way that protects the natural environment and enhances the lives of those we come in contact with. We feel a strong responsibility to our planet’s food system and we are committed to sourcing carefully, trimming waste, and making the most of each ingredient. At the Jambo Grill, our sustainability journey is never over, and we hope to continue to improve our practices. We look forward to growing a better world along with other Sustainable Pittsburgh restaurants.” says Executive Chef, Jessie Rattanni.
Nestled in the African Savannah portion of the zoo, Jambo Grill overlooks the exhibits, so adults and children can watch the giraffes and zebras while enjoying a snack from the delicious, inventive menu. The menu features favorites like burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas, as well as seasonal salads and snacks for any palate. Jambo Grill’s meals are made to order and sandwich breads are baked in house. Lunch specials are offered daily, including Meatless Monday and Sustainable Seafood Fridays. Some of the daily specials may even come from the zoo’s on-site herb garden. Jambo Grill strives to welcome families with budget-friendly menu options that appeal to people of all ages, and provide quality, fresh menu options.
Jambo Grill demonstrates its commitment to sustainability through a number of different practices. The restaurant participates in hyperlocal sourcing by making use of its on-site garden. They purchase local and regional foods from Paragon Foods and buy ingredients from local farms. Jambo Grill also works with Pittsburgh Job Corps to provide job opportunities for local culinary students from at-risk populations, and takes pride in the fact that 85% of its employees are from the local community. Additionally, the establishment uses solar panels to generate energy, Energy Star appliances, energy efficient lighting, and it has a barrier between outside air and the main entrance to avoid wasting energy on heating and cooling.
