Designation Level: Gold

Located in East Liberty near Bakery Square, Great Harvest Bread Company mills their own wheat and bakes fresh bread daily, allowing them to serve delicious meals all day long. Breakfast and lunch sandwiches, in addition to tasty salads and grain bowls produced with fresh, high-quality ingredients round out the menu. Great Harvest Bread Company shows their commitment to Pittsburgh by supporting vibrant communities and a healthy environment, demonstrated through their Gold designation earned through the Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant program.

Since the late 1970s, Great Harvest Bread Company has been serving high quality breads made from the finest ingredients from around the world. “We mill our wheat every day to create our 100% whole wheat breads and goodies. This enables us to bring you the freshest, most phenomenal bread possible,” says John Myers, owner and manager of the Pittsburgh location. “We are very excited to have teamed up with Sustainable Pittsburgh to show our commitment to our environment and community.”

The hallmark of Great Harvest Bread Company is the freshly-milled flour they prepare daily to maintain all protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that occur naturally in wheat kernel, essential for providing a nutritious product. Blending this with simple ingredients such as yeast, salt, and honey makes for delicious, hearty, and healthy bread, served fresh every day.

As a Gold designated restaurant, Great Harvest Bread Company has committed to a variety of different sustainable practices. They have demonstrated a commitment to the people of the community by collaborating with Pittsburgh Community Services Incorporated and East End Cooperative Ministry to donate breads and other freshly baked goods, working with Best Buddies and the Bidwell Training Center to build career opportunities for vulnerable populations, and by exceeding the industry standard for employee wages. According to their self-assessment, they source a high percentage of meats and produce locally. They have also demonstrated a commitment to energy efficiency through the use of Energy Star appliances and energy efficient LED lighting.
