It’s fitting that Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a trailblazer for constructing living buildings and fostering sustainable practices, has an accompanying restaurant that operates with the same sustainable values. Named one of the Best Museum Restaurants in the United States by Food & Wine magazine, Cafe Phipps serves a wide variety of food and beverages that can be enjoyed as a full meal, or a grab-and-go snack. A Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant since 2016, Cafe Phipps achieved a Platinum designation, the highest level of commitment to sustainability within the program.
“The mission of Cafe Phipps is to provide our visitors with fresh, healthy meals featuring local, organic, sustainably produced and seasonal ingredients whenever possible; to create an enjoyable green dining experience for visitors of all ages; and to highlight the important connections between people, plants, health and the planet,” says General Manager Amy Reed.
Cafe Phipps views its offerings as an extension of Phipps Conservatory’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Much of the produce used is grown right in their very own organic rooftop garden. The Cafe also recognizes the importance of providing healthy menu items for children and offers a menu inspired by whole foods, low in fat, salt and sugar. The cafe has even replaced sugary sodas with their own unique fruity drink, the Phipps Splash, a healthier choice that quenches the thirst of the most parched patrons.
As its Platinum designation suggests, Cafe Phipps engages in many different sustainable practices. One of the most noteworthy practices is that around 90 percent of food products used by the cafe are either organically certified or naturally grown. Similarly, Cafe Phipps is highly dedicated to local sourcing and buys many goods from area dairies, farmer co-ops and breweries. In an effort to reduce food waste, they utilize composting services from a local facility. The cafe also recognizes employee and community welfare by paying their dedicated staff higher than the minimum wage, and by helping underserved communities grow fresh and healthy food.
