The Porch at Schenley’s commitment to local ingredients begins on the roof.
Up there, the Oakland restaurant raises vegetables, fruits and herbs to incorporate into its dishes during the growing season. Honey comes from bees in rooftop hives.
Dedication to homegrown food helped make The Porch one of the first restaurants to get a platinum designation — the highest level — from Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant, a fast-growing program by the nonprofit Sustainable Pittsburgh that is promoting and broadening the community of southwestern Pennsylvania eateries that get food from source to stomach sustainably.
The Downtown-based organization is known for helping businesses and communities make greener choices in areas like energy use and waste reduction. It launched the restaurant program last summer to foster those values in the regional food scene.
