Since 2008, Dinette has been serving gourmet thin-crust pizzas, wines, and other Mediterranean-style salads and small plates in East Liberty. In 2015, Dinette became the first restaurant to earn the Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant designation, and in 2017, earned the Platinum level designation, establishing the highest achievement within the program.
In the words of Owner and Chef Sonja Finn, “It is Dinette’s core value to be responsible to the entirety of the food system from animal or seed, to farmer, fisherman or rancher, to supplier, to method of distribution, to restaurant employees, and finally to the customer and surrounding community.” Chef Finn is also the Chef of The Cafe Carnegie at the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History. She has received a number of awards, including the James Beard Foundation’s “Rising Star Chef of the Year,” Mother Nature Network’s “40 Chefs Under 40,” Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s “Young Pittsburghers to Watch,” and was a two-time regional nominee for Food and Wine’s “People’s Best New Chef.”
As a Platinum designated restaurant, Dinette keeps up with many sustainable practices. Food sourcing is one in which Finn is diligent about throughout the year, prioritizing cage free chickens, grass fed beef, and wild caught seafood. Meats and produce alike are purchased from local sources and some produce is even grown in their rooftop garden. Another highlight is that Dinette’s wages exceed the industry standard for wages for both front-of-house and back-of-house employee, resulting in all employees making well beyond minimum wage. Dinette also helps to provide children in underserved communities with access to fresh, healthy food by donating to 412 Food Rescue.
