Designation Level: Gold

Nothing embodies the heritage and pride of Pittsburgh’s North Side quite like Legends Eatery. The cozy Italian bistro on the corner of North Avenue and James Street has been serving homemade pasta, Spots Romano (pan-fried sea bass, a house favorite) and other staples to locals and first-time guests since 2002. Since early 2017, Legends has been a Gold designated Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant, demonstrating its commitment to the environment, economy and community of Pittsburgh.

The hallmark of Legends Eatery is the open kitchen, where guests can always see and smell the aromatic Italian dishes being prepared. Owner and Chef Dan Bartow buys only quality ingredients and his menu has something for everyone. From pasta staples like Penne Vodka and Gnocchi Bolognese to specialties like Veal Parmigiano, Chicken Scallopini, and even seafood specialties like the Blackened Shrimp Penne and Mussels Bianco—the recipes are always a hit.

And we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that the homemade desserts are sensational!

Legends demonstrates its commitment to sustainability through a number of practices. They are committed to serving humanely processed animal products, which they source regionally from Trax Farms in Clinton, PA, as well as sustainably sourced seafood, based on the guidance of the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch Guide. They make efforts to source produce locally and regionally from BECCARI’s Farm Market and Serenity Hill Farms, and they derive ingredients for bread, cheese, and dairy products from local producers. They also regularly partner with Children’s Hospital, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society to promote and raise funds for their causes.
